Helen of Troy

 

Prior to our trip, to prepare ourselves for Greek culture, Rik and I started reading The Iliad". It's funny how we all create our own, unique, mental picture when reading, to bring a story to life. It's easier if you see a movie because the filmmaker has done all the work, by casting the characters.

Helen of Troy caused quite a stir but there are no pictures of her.  Homer failed to mention her hair colour in The Iliad. Rik doesn't think Diane Kruger fits the bill. (She played Helen in the movie "Troy") "Greek women aren't blond."

Today on our tour, Dominic mentioned Troy and Helen.  So I pounced with my question about what colour Helen's hair was, according to the Greek people of today.

Dominic replied, "I think she was a blond - not a blond-blond, but with streaks. I don't know why I think that, but there must be a reference somewhere."

...followed by "You ask the strangest questions."

You have no idea, Dominic.  😄
